Get to know our ACES team: Q&A with Paul Janson, NHS Partnership Executive for ACES Lincoln, Nottingham & Peterborough

We had a chat with Paul Janson, NHS Partnership Executive for our clinics in Lincoln, Nottingham and Peterborough. One of our latest recruits, Paul was keen to join a business where he can truly make a difference to the lives of local patients in urgent need of care.

  • What were you doing previously?

I’ve been involved in Optics for a long time now – I walked into Specsavers back in 1997 asking for a job and haven’t looked back since! Many years later, I was the General Manager for the Loughborough site, as well as Regional Chair. After leaving, I spent several years working for BBGR (one of Europe’s leading lens manufacturers) as Lab Manager. Following on from that, I have locumed in both Practice setting and for the domiciliary company VisionCall.

Lately, I worked for Dunelm Optical as a Sales Manager, and lastly for Lenstec/Essilor as the Regional Sales Manager—so I’ve seen a bit over the years!

  • What first attracted you to join ACES?

Well, that’s an easy question. I wanted to join a cause that I can believe in and be in a role where I can actually make a difference for the local community—so here we are.

  • Can you explain what your role with ACES involves?

My role involves educating both Optical and GP practices about the range of eye care options available to their patients, with a focus on cataract surgery. ACES takes a person-centred approach, ensuring that each patient is treated with the care and respect they deserve, while delivering a level of excellence typically associated with private care. Our outcomes speak for themselves, and my aim is to refine how we communicate these key differentiators.

  • What are you most excited about?

Shortly after coming on board, I was lucky to witness a surgery procedure on a patient who had wanted corrective surgery for years. I spoke to her before, during and after the procedure, and it was incredible to see that it exceeded all her expectations and revived her with hope. I’ve seen how all the clinic staff was looking after the lady like she was a private patient. I’m excited to be able to provide as many people as possible with a new, improved lifestyle.

  • What is the best piece of advice that you’ve ever received?

‘Buy cheap, buy twice’.

  • What would you do if you won the lottery?

I did actually win the lottery, back in 1998, at a Christmas draw… We had the best Christmas, and we made sure our family benefited from it too. We made the conscious decision to spend it all, and all I have left from the winnings is a Beatles Album—but what a ride it’s been…

Now if I won the big one, I would be able to build the home I’ve always wanted, and be able to set our sons up for the future. But most importantly, my wife, Sharon, would be able to fulfil her dream of finally having her own Counselling Practice, which could help all those unable to afford it, affordable therapy.
