We had a chat with Peter Muldowney, NHS Partnership Executive for our clinic in Newcastle. Joining us with a wealth of knowledge and experience working with a resident competitor of eye care services, Peter has been a driving force between the growth of our services in the local area.
- What were you doing previously?
I previously worked for a competitor provider and played a crucial role in the opening of their Newcastle hospital in 2021. Prior to that, I have 25 years’ experience working in sales and account management across large corporate companies in FMCG, Pharmaceuticals and Consumer Healthcare.
- What first attracted you to join ACES?
I was aware that ACES had been active in Newcastle for a while but had struggled for consistent engagement with the community. I knew I could use the skills I learned in my previous role, and saw this as an opportunity to help build awareness of ACES awareness and provide NHS patients across the North East and North Cumbria ICB with premium services normally only available to private patients.

- Can you explain what your role with ACES involves?
I’ve been developing partnerships with optometrists, practice owners and practice managers in opticians across the region—whether they be independent practices, regional groups or national high street practices. My role involves educating healthcare professionals on the range of NHS services ACES can provide to patients, which can greatly reduce waiting times and allow them to live their lives to the fullest, without prolonged unnecessary suffering.
- What are you most excited about?
Since I have took on this role, I have been involved in discussions with the region’s Healthcare Commissioners to help shape the services that ACES can provide to patients in Newcastle. We currently offer Cataract Surgery and YAG Laser Treatment to NHS patients, but soon we’ll be offering a wider range of services, to help more of the people of the North East and North Cumbria with quality care that is convenient in a community setting.
- What is the best piece of advice that you’ve ever received?
In the words of Albert Einstein, “once you stop learning, you start dying”. So, keep learning, be curious—not judgemental—and approach everything with a growth mindset.
- What would you do if you won the lottery?
I’d spend as much time as possible with my family and friends—making memories and experiencing as much of life as possible.
