We had a chat with Heather Chennells, NHS Partnership Executive for our ACES clinics in Anglia including Norwich, Fakenham, Thetford & Wisbech. Patient care focused and strong-willed, Heather has been a driving force behind the success of our clinics in this area.
- What were you doing previously?
I worked for another private provider of NHS eye care services for ten months before I switched over to ACES.
- What first attracted you to join ACES?
ACES have a very good reputation in Anglia, where they have been providing services for many years. My previous experience in a similar role proved to be a valuable asset for the company and I was keen to use my knowledge of the local area.
- Can you explain what your role with ACES involves?
It is primarily a liaison role, where I am the point of contact between opticians and their local ACES clinic. It is my role to ensure that the optical practices have a clear understanding of the referral pathway in their location, and I also keep them up to date on our current wait times.
- What are you most excited about?
I am excited work alongside my colleagues, and work as a team to reach new heights.
- Is there anyone who has inspired you during your career?
My first line manager at an optical company advised me that I would make a good interim manager – someone who could be relied upon to see what needed fixing, and who would do what it takes to fix it. This temporary role inspired me to become an area manager myself.
She also reminded me that my role is to deliver results, and I have since become very target-oriented, which has helped me drive referrals to all the ACES clinics in my area.

- What is the best piece of advice that you’ve ever received?
No one will love you or find you lovable if you don’t love yourself first!
- What are you most proud of?
I completed the 500-mile pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela – known as the “Camino” – in 28 days, while carrying a 2 stone rucksack in order to save someone’s soul.
- What would you do if you won the lottery?
I would establish a clinic in Colombia / Sri Lanka to help sterilise the wild dog population there and provide healthcare for them.
